What is Assessment Testing?

Assessment testing is essentially a measurement process of the learning that has either taken place or can take place. Under No Child Left Behind, tests are aligned with academic standards. Beginning in the 2002-03 school year, schools must administer tests in each of three grade spans: grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grades 10-12 in all schools.

What Assessment & Standardized Testing do our Children Receive?

  • 1.  WESTEST:  The WESTEST (West Virginia Educational Standards Test ) is an achievement test administered annually throughout  West Virginia.  This test compares achievement of Creed Collins Elementary Students with other students throughout the state.  The test is given to students in grades 3-5 and is usually given in May.
  • 2Writing assessment: The writing assessment is simply a writing test given annually to 4th grade students.  Like the WESTEST, it is administered annually throughout West Virginia and compares Creed Collins Elementary Students achievements with other students throughout the state.
  •  3. MAP assessment:  The MAP assessment is an assessment given to students K-5 to measure student achievement and growth.  This test measures where a student is academically and compares the results with other students throughout the Nation.  The teachers also use the results to assist them in their teaching.  For example: If students are having difficulties drawing conclusions from a reading passage but does well with  knowing the difference between a fact and opinion, then the teacher knows to focus their teaching on drawing conclusion while maintaining the students knowledge on facts and opinions.  The academic areas that are tested by the MAP are Mathematics, Language Arts, and reading and is administered three times a year.
  • 4. DIBELS - Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. DIBELS is simply a reading assessment for grades K-2 that measures the achievement and growth of reading skills and is given throughout the year. The letter sent to all Student’s in Ritchie County can be viewed here…DIBELS letter
